Girls B participated in the Holy Trinity Basketball Tournament this past weekend.  Through tough defense and aggressive offense the Lady Saxons defeated Mary Star 29-8 in their first game of the tournament.  In the semi final round, the Lady Saxons were defeated by a talented Holy Trinity (1) team 38-32.  Despite the lost the girls looked very strong and played hard all the way till the end.  They recovered quickly from the loss playing a thriller of a game against Holy Trinity (2) team that went into overtime.  After two intense periods the score was tied 18-18.  But the Lady Saxons showed their toughness and perseverance in overtime playing outstanding defense.  Breanna Ortiz heated up, scoring all of the teams overtime points which led to a Lady Saxon 24-18 victory.

Varsity Football Falls in Sweet 16

November 17th, 2009

Facing St. Francis Xavier of Burbank in the Sweet 16 round of the CYO Playoffs, the Varsity Football team knew it was in for a tough game.  The Saxons struck first, scoring in the first quarter on a Thomas Hernandez touchdown pass to Elmer Moreno to take 6-0 lead.  St. Francis battled back to score a touchdown in the second quarter but the Saxon defense held on the point after to keep the game tied at 6.  A few minutes later the defense came up big again, forcing a safety to take an 8-6 lead near the close of the half.  The third quarter saw the defenses continue to hold as Nick Sheffield made several strong plays from his safety position to keep the score the same entering the final period.  A long drive saw St. Francis take a 14-6 lead with just over two minutes remaining, giving the Saxons one last chance.  Unfortunately the drive came up just short as Isaias Najera had his flag pulled on the four yard line as time expired.

Although understandably disappointed in the immediate aftermath of the game, the team can look back with pride on what they accomplished during an excellent season.  They fought hard until the last play on Saturday, and although losing is never easy they represented themselves and St. Augustine well by competing to the best of their ability each time they stepped on the field.  Special congratulations and thanks to eighth graders Angel, Miguel, Elmer, Isaias, Enrique, Nick, Cesar, and Arnold for your hard work over the years and good luck in high school.

The C Football team finished the season with a thriller of a game against St. Jerome that was decided in the last play of the game.  The pass rushing of KC kept the pressure on the Spartans while Marco Diaz scored 2 touchdowns.  With the game tied 14-14, Nico Gooden ran the ball 40 yards evading many St. Jerome players to score the game winning touchdown as time expired giving the Saxons a 20-14 win.

The C football team showed amazing growth this year.  They worked hard all season, showing great dedication and determination throughout.  This Saxons team played hard in all their games and truly gave it everything they had.  With the experienced gained from this season the Saxons look to a bright future as the younger players move up to be leaders of next years team, while our 4th graders will go on to B football, using the skills they have learned this year to make positive contributions to the team.  I would also like to thank the parents.  Without them this season would not have been possible.  It was a truly a great team effort from the coaches, players and parents that made this season so fun and exciting.

On Friday Nov. 13, the C volleyball teams played their final games of the season.  The White Team took on St. Mark’s and looked very strong in the first game with great serving by all but fell short by a close score of 23-25.  The team fought back in the second game and came out with an exciting win by a score of 25-19!  But despite the excellent serving and court play of Aliyah, Keiana, Melissa, and Chelsea G, and the improved serving of Maxine and Brianna,  St. Mark won the tie-breaking third game.  Ms. Gerski wants to recognize 4th graders, Brianna Henein and Christina Davis for their participation and fine play and wishes them well as they move up to the B team.    The Blue Team was up next and played a tough St. Paul’s team.  4th grader Anne-Clarisse Cervantes served perhaps her best games of the season while 3rd graders Chelsy M.,  Karlie,  Brittany,  Claudia,  Lorena,  and Isabella all equally impressed their coach and the crowd with their successful serves.   St. Paul’s won both games but the team stayed up and positive as they faced their next opponents, St. Martin of Tours.   Although the team’s other ace server Annabelle Asali was not in the line-up due to her injury,  the Blue Team was determined to get a win.  They played hard, served extremely well and won the match in 2 games with scores of 25-19 and 25-22.  It was a great ending to a fun season!!  Good luck to Anne-Clarisse and Annabelle as they go on to play at the B level .  Their athletic talents and leadership skills will certainly make for an even stronger B team next season.

B Volleyball took on St. Anastasia on Friday, and although they came up short on the scoreboard the team showed tremendous improvement in their style of play.  Rather than hitting the ball over the net on one try, they consistently worked to pass to each other setting up more effective hits and putting more pressure on the opposition.  The play of Sydney Guerra and Jazmine Raya stood out in this regard as they combined for several nice plays.
